Over again before it started for McGowan

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,

Dustin McGowanDustin McGowan, the injury-prone permanent resident on the DL for the Toronto Blue Jays has seen another setback. After going down with shoulder labrum surgery in July of 2008, McGowan attempted a comeback but had to cut that short after knee surgery in 2009. Before this season began, all signs were optimistic for the right-hander, but he was shut down in March with a “dead arm”, and an MRI earlier this week put the nail in the coffin for this season.

Ubaldo Jimenez keeps on rolling and wins his 12th game

Ubaldo Jimenez

The Colorado Rockies’ Ubaldo Jimenez keeps on rolling.  He won his 12th game of the season against only one loss and still sports a spectacular 1.16 ERA.  The reason for “still” in the previous sentence is because coming into the game, Jimenez had a ridiculous 0.93 ERA.  However, Jimenez gave up three runs and an uncharacteristic five walks in six innings versus the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.  The three earned runs were the most Jimenez has given up in a game in 13 games.  Amazingly, Jimenez has received a decision in every contest he’s been in .  His only loss was a 2-0 defeat by the division rival, Los Angeles Dodgers on May 9, in which Jimenez only gave up one run in seven innings or work.  Regardless, Jimenez is the hottest pitcher going right now.

Dominating division putting others to shame

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,

Carl CrawfordHas anybody else noticed that four of the five best records in the American League belong to teams from the East? The Rays and Yankees are one, two, split up only by Minnesota, who is a half-game ahead of both Boston and Toronto. Behind them is the AL West-leading Texas Rangers, who are two games back of them. From the Rays to the Jays, there is a 3.5 game gap, and there’s still two-thirds of the season left to play.

Woes for the O’s

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,

Ty WiggintonWho needed a day off more than the Baltimore Orioles? Perhaps the rest of baseball. MLB’s worst team by record sat Monday after being swept for the second time this season by the Toronto Blue Jays, the team who many thought would finish behind the O’s in the standings for the first time since 2004. Instead two months into the season, the Jays are 14.5 games ahead. It’s not looking too good for the fortune-telling community.

Rumors have been swirling about the possible schedule change for month, and now that it has become official, it has become the number one sports story in the city.

Blue Jays turning heads with fifth straight win

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,

Jason FrasorIs there a team with more to prove than the Toronto Blue Jays? Before the season began a week ago, many already wrote the Jays off as the basement dwellers in the American League East. Six games into the season, they own sole possession of first with a 5-1 record after taking two from Texas to begin the road trip and following that up with a sweep of Baltimore, who were supposed to have leapfrogged the Jays in sheer talent. The Jays sent a message to the nation by winning their fifth straight.

Breaking down the game early is still just as fun

Miguel CabreraNow that almost every team has had a chance to complete a series and show the nation what they’ve got. It seems like the mystery that can surround Spring Training is ancient history, when really it’s only been five days. That’s the beauty of nationally televised baseball. And not only do these games matter, but managers are playing their top players. There’s nothing like April baseball, and we’re seeing it as good as it gets.

Toronto’s Wells on pace for 243 homers

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Vernon WellsVernon Wells, Toronto’s highly overpaid All-Star center fielder is already 20 percent of the way to matching his home run total from 2009. With a pair of big bombs against Texas’ Dustin Nippert and Darren Oliver on Wednesday night to go along with his Opening Day blast to ruin Scott Feldman’s start gives him three homers in the first two games of the season. In 158 games last year, he only managed to reach a total of 15.

Jays win, Halladay loses…not your typical headline

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Roy HalladayThe Blue Jays got their first taste of an opposing Roy Halladay on Wednesday when they made the short trip from Dunedin to Bright House Field in Clearwater. The Jays showed their appreciation for Halladay and his new Philly uniform by swatting balls left and right, touching up the ace starter for four runs in the first inning alone. However, Halladay was able to pick himself up in the show why he’s one of the best by striking out three batters in the second.

A’s pick up Gaudin from Yankees trash bin

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Chad GaudinChad Gaudin will be moving clear across the country. After being released by the New York Yankees on Thursday, the right-handed pitcher reached an agreement with Oakland worth $700K. Gaudin, who was primarily a starter with the Yankees in 2009 will likely end up as part of the A’s bullpen as many of their current hurlers are sidelined with various injuries. This is a good pickup for the A’s as Gaudin can be used as both a starter and reliever, based on where he’s needed most.
